Amazon’s pricing signals suggest the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus and 4K Max — not the aging Fire TV Cube — could be the next Android-based devices replaced by Vega OS.

Amazon has already confirmed that every future Fire TV Stick will run its in-house Vega OS, and new signs suggest the remaining Android-based models won’t be around much longer. Most assumed the aging Fire TV Cube would be the next device replaced, but Amazon’s current pricing behavior points instead to the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus and Fire TV Stick 4K Max being first out the door.
Why the Cube Should Be Next — But Might Not Be
Amazon typically announces new hardware every September, and a new Fire TV model is almost always part of the lineup. In the past, guessing which device would be replaced was simple: look for the oldest one. That pattern has gotten murkier since Amazon began shifting its cheaper sticks over to Vega OS, pushing newer devices like the Fire TV Stick HD and Fire TV Stick 4K Select ahead of older Android-based hardware in the release order.
By age alone, the 3rd-generation Fire TV Cube, released in 2022, would be the obvious candidate for replacement. The Fire TV Stick 4K Plus technically launched under that name in 2025, but it’s essentially a renamed version of the 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K, and the Fire TV Stick 4K Max also dates back to 2023. So the Cube looks like it should be next — except Amazon’s current pricing tells a different story.
What Amazon’s Pricing Is Signaling
As of this week, every Fire TV model is on sale except the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. The Fire TV Stick 4K Plus is discounted too, but by only $10 — the smallest markdown it has ever received. According to AFTVnews, that kind of pattern usually means Amazon is stretching remaining inventory ahead of a replacement rather than trying to clear out stock.

A Simpler Lineup Could Be Coming
AFTVnews also speculates that Amazon could use this transition to simplify its Fire TV Stick lineup entirely, dropping the “Select” and “Plus” naming altogether in favor of a single, straightforward Fire TV Stick 4K name running Vega OS.
Should You Buy an Android-Based Fire TV Stick Now?
If you specifically want Android-based Fire TV hardware, now is likely your last chance to grab one before Vega OS takes over the entire Stick lineup. Amazon will probably continue selling the current Fire TV Stick 4K Plus and 4K Max while supplies last, but the Android era of the Fire TV Stick could effectively end as soon as next month.
Before you rush out to buy one, it’s worth remembering why this shift is happening in the first place. Vega OS, the platform replacing Android on Fire TV Sticks, doesn’t support sideloading and has already cut off access to a number of third-party apps that worked fine on Android-based Fire TV devices. Amazon has made clear it intends to keep moving its hardware toward Vega OS, so there’s no guarantee that today’s Android-based Sticks will keep receiving the same level of app support indefinitely either.
