HOW TO STOP BUFFERING
Stop Buffering for Good on Any Streaming Device
Learn how to stop buffering on Firesticks, Android boxes and other streaming devices with these simple, step-by-step fixes. Start at the top — most problems are solved in the first three steps.
8 Ways to Stop Buffering
Quick Symptom Check
Find the line that matches what you’re seeing — it points you to the most likely cause.
| What you’re seeing | What it usually means / what to check |
|---|---|
| Everything buffers, on every app | Slow or unstable internet. Run a speed test (Step 1) and restart your modem (Step 4). |
| Buffering only on IPTV / live TV apps | Your internet provider may be throttling that traffic. Try a VPN (Step 7). |
| Streams work on mobile data but not on Wi-Fi | Your provider or router may be filtering traffic. A VPN usually confirms and fixes this. |
| App opens but channels won’t play | Possible port blocking or DNS filtering. Clear the cache (Step 2), then try a VPN. |
| Everything works better with the VPN on | That confirms your provider is throttling or filtering. Keep the VPN on while streaming. |
| Movies & shows: few links, or links that fail | Free links are overloaded. A Debrid service gives you more, faster links (Step 8). |
| Video freezes but sound keeps going (or the reverse) | Player issue. Switch to an external player like VLC (Step 3). |
1. Check Your Internet Speed
The number one cause of buffering is a slow or unstable internet connection. You don’t need massive speed to stream, but you do need enough — and it needs to be steady.
25+ Mbps
Recommended for HD & 4K streaming.
Low Ping
Just as important as speed — lower is better.
Test the Device
Test on your streaming box, not your phone.
You can test speed and ping with free apps from the Google Play Store or the Amazon Appstore. We recommend Analiti or Ookla’s Speedtest app, or visit Speedtest.net in your device’s browser.
Tip: If your speed is fine but streams still buffer, your internet provider may be throttling streaming traffic. A VPN will stop that. For movie & series apps, a Debrid service gives you the best-quality feeds.
2. Force Stop the App & Clear the Cache
Apps store temporary files (cache) that build up and slow things down. Clearing them is one of the easiest ways to stop buffering, and you won’t lose your settings.
Android TV Boxes
- Press the Home button on your remote.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose the app you want to clear.
- Select Force Stop and confirm.
- Select Clear Cache and confirm.
- Press Back to close Settings.
Amazon Firesticks
- Press the Home button on your remote.
- Open Settings.
- Select Applications.
- Select Manage Installed Applications.
- Choose the app you want to clear.
- Select Force Stop.
- Select Clear Cache, then press Back.
Do NOT select “Clear Data” or “Clear Storage.” That erases the app’s settings, logins and playlists, and you’ll have to set it up again from scratch.

3. Change the Video Player
Most streaming apps let you change the default video player in the app’s Settings. Switching to an external player — like VLC — often fixes buffering, missing sound, or subtitle problems.
- Open the app’s Settings and look for Player or Default Player.
- Choose an external player installed on your device. We recommend VLC, but use whichever you prefer.
- Each player has its own settings (buffer size, hardware decoding, audio) you can adjust for even better results.
Don’t have one installed? Download VLC from the Google Play Store or Amazon Appstore, or side-load another player.
4. Restart Your Modem / Router
Restarting your modem and router is one of the quickest ways to restore your internet speed. Over time the router’s memory fills up and slows your connection. A restart clears it, applies any pending updates, and gives every device a clean start.
- Unplug the modem/router from the wall (not from the back of the unit).
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in and give it a few minutes to fully reconnect — wait until all the lights are steady.
- Restart your streaming device too, so it gets a fresh connection.
5. Using Wi-Fi? Switch to Ethernet
Wi-Fi is shared by every phone, tablet and TV in your home — the more devices in use, the less bandwidth is left for your stream. A wired Ethernet connection is faster and far more stable.
Android TV Boxes
Most have a built-in Ethernet port. Just plug a network cable from your router straight into the box.
Firesticks
No built-in port, so Wi-Fi can be weaker. An inexpensive Ethernet adapter lets you plug in a cable.
Stuck with Wi-Fi? Connect to your router’s 5 GHz network if it has one, and keep the device as close to the router as you can.
6. Update Your Device & Apps
- Check if a system update is available for your device.
- Uninstall and reinstall apps that aren’t working or are out of date.
- Try a different app — some apps simply work much better than others.
- Make sure all cables (Ethernet, HDMI and power) are firmly plugged in.
- Replace old or damaged cables.
- Free up storage — uninstall apps you no longer use.

7. Use a VPN
Some internet providers slow down (throttle) or filter streaming traffic. A VPN encrypts your connection so your provider can’t see what you’re streaming — which stops the throttling and is often the fastest way to stop buffering on live TV.
- Protect your browsing data with a verified no-logs VPN.
- Encrypt your connection on any Wi-Fi network.
- Securely access streaming services and live sports.
VPN settings tip: Connect to a server close to you for the best speed. If streams still buffer with the VPN on, try a different nearby server or switch the VPN protocol (WireGuard is usually fastest).

8. Getting Few or No Links? Get a Debrid Service
For movie and series apps, free links are often slow, overloaded, or don’t work at all. A Debrid service gives you high-quality links hosted on fast, unrestricted servers — so you get more feeds, higher quality, and links that actually work.
We recommend TorBox: a low-cost, fast multi-hoster that works with many popular streaming apps, Kodi add-ons and Stremio add-ons.
- Stream instantly at your full internet speed.
- Private, secure cloud service focused on speed and privacy.
- Free to try — no credit card required.
Buffering FAQs
The most common causes are a slow or unstable internet connection, a full app cache, or your internet provider throttling streaming traffic. Run a speed test, clear the app cache, and restart your modem. If live TV still buffers, try a VPN.
We recommend at least 25 Mbps for smooth HD and 4K streaming. Ping matters just as much as speed, so a steady connection with low ping is best. Always test on your streaming device, not your phone.
No. Clearing the cache only removes temporary files. Just make sure you do not select Clear Data or Clear Storage, because that erases the app’s settings, logins and playlists.
Yes, if your internet provider is throttling or filtering streaming traffic. A VPN encrypts your connection so your provider cannot see what you are streaming. For the best speed, connect to a VPN server close to you.
Free links are often overloaded or offline. A Debrid service such as TorBox gives you more, higher-quality links hosted on fast servers, so streams start quicker and buffer less.
Yes. Ethernet is faster and more stable because it does not share wireless bandwidth with every other device in your home. Android boxes have a built-in port, and Firesticks can use an inexpensive Ethernet adapter.
