The short answer
The latest Stremio Android TV update, v1.12.0, landed on October 26 with a new calendar page, a tidier poster-grid layout, and fixes for two of the most common annoyances we hear about: server connection problems and subtitles picking the wrong track.
Meanwhile, if you’ve been waiting on Kodi 22, keep waiting. As of today there is still no new stable Kodi release. Kodi 22 “Piers” is still at Release Candidate 1 (from October 10), and the current stable Kodi remains 21.3. One app is shipping improvements now; the other is still on the way.

What’s new in Stremio Android TV v1.12.0
From Stremio’s own Tech Update #87 (October 26, 2026):
- A new calendar page: see what’s coming up in your library in a calendar view, instead of hunting through lists.
- A grid layout for Discover and Library: your shows and movies now display as a proper poster grid, which is much easier to browse on a TV screen than a long row.
- Server connectivity fixes: if Stremio sometimes struggled to connect, this update addresses that.
- Subtitle auto-select fixes: subtitles should now pick the right track more reliably instead of defaulting to the wrong language.
- A visual fix for right-to-left layouts when previewing items.
- For supporters: new profile-lock options. You can turn the profile PIN off completely, or set how long before it asks again.
Quick tip: the grid view isn’t on by default for everyone. If you don’t see it, look at the genre selector bar on the Discover or Library page; the layout toggle sits at the right-hand end of it.
How to get the update
On most Android TV and Google TV boxes, the update arrives through the Play Store like any other app update. Play Store updates roll out gradually, so if you haven’t seen it yet, open the Play Store on your box, search for Stremio, and tap Update if it’s offered. There’s no need to reinstall Stremio or reset your box. Please don’t reset anything; an app update never needs that.
Can’t find the update, or can’t get into your Play Store at all? Reach out to us for a hand. That’s a five-minute fix with help, and a frustrating afternoon without it.
And Kodi 22? Still no change
We know a lot of you watch for Kodi news, and our Kodi coverage is some of the most-read on this site. Here’s the honest status, checked today:
- Kodi 22 “Piers” reached Release Candidate 1 on October 10. A release candidate is a near-final test build, not the finished release.
- There has been no RC2 and no final release since.
- The current stable Kodi is still 21.3 (Omega), and that’s still what we recommend for anyone who isn’t comfortable testing pre-release software.
None of this makes Kodi a bad app. For a personal media library, a home-theatre setup, or anyone who enjoys tinkering, Kodi is still excellent. But this is the pattern we’ve pointed out before: Kodi’s big releases arrive on Kodi’s schedule, while Stremio, when it’s set up correctly, keeps quietly improving in the background with small, steady updates like this one. If you just want to press play and watch, that steady upkeep matters.

Stremio vs Kodi right now, at a glance
| Stremio (Android TV) | Kodi | |
|---|---|---|
| Latest version | v1.12.0, released Oct 26, 2026 | Stable 21.3; Kodi 22 still in testing (RC1) |
| Update style | Small, frequent improvements | Big releases, long gaps |
| Best for | Press play and watch | Media libraries, home theatre, tinkerers |
| Upkeep | Low, when set up correctly | Higher: add-ons and builds need attention |
| Works on | Android TV / Google TV boxes | Almost everything |
One caution that applies to both: neither app belongs on the newest Vega OS Fire TV sticks, which can’t run them at all. If you’re shopping for a stick, check before you buy. We covered that here.
